Amazon.com Review

Welcome petite feathered friends and their happy songs into the garden with this bird feeder from Duncraft. The metal selective feeder enables small birds to feed without the usual disturbances of large pest birds, like crows, or destructive squirrels with its protective design. For hanging only, the feeder provides nourishment for birds all through the year.

The selective feeder presents seed in a 15-1/2-inch recycled polycarbonate tube. Birds perch before six metal seed ports to eat. A metal grid-style casing surrounds the tube, keeping pests away by allowing only small birds to pass through the gaps in the casing to dine. A metal cap tops the feeder to thwart the chewing of squirrels and other mammals. A solid metal tray catches fallen seed for greater conservation. The feeder offers a heavy-duty metal hanging loop for installing the feeder from tree branches or from an overhang. Users should regularly clean the feeder with equal parts water and white vinegar to protect the birds from bacteria and disease and restock with fresh seed. The feeder holds approximately 1-1/2 pounds of seed. Birdseed is not included. The feeder spans 17-1/2 inches in length with a 10-1/2-inch diameter. This item weighs 6 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

2.0 out of 5 stars A favorite of finches, siskins, and red squirrels, January 29, 2006

This morning I saw a red-tailed hawk swoop up and grab one of the little pine siskins in this cage feeder, right through the bars. I had thought the birds were safe in this feeder, but it turned out to be not quite true. The hawk had trouble pulling his foot back out of the cage with the pine siskin trapped in his claws, but he finally managed it.

Even though Duncraft makes some great bird feeders, there are three reasons why I would not buy this model again:

--red squirrels can squeeze through the bars and get at the seed

--the cage bottom is very difficult to clean. The discarded husks, seeds, and bird droppings create a formidable cement, even after just one day (as I said, the small birds really like this feeder)

--hawks can reach through the bars and extract the smaller birds

2.0 out of 5 stars So so hard to keep clean, August 22, 2007

Do NOT buy this bird feeder. After a thunderstorm, half the feeder was full and it was hard as a rock. It took me hours to finally get all the seed out, the tube is almost impossible to clean. The birds DO like being inside the "cage" and the squirrels cant get to the seed but cleaning this feeder is next to impossible. Look for something else if looking for a squirrel resistant feeder.
